Chowder Bay
Mid-afternoon, STS Young Endeavour – Australia’s National Sail Training Ship - berthed alongside Sub Base Platypus at Neutral Bay to collect a crew of 21 Aussie youths and prepare for its first-ever voyage from our community recreation and work hub.
Sub Base Platypus is steeped in maritime heritage, having served as a torpedo factory and submarine base during the 20th century, making it an apt launching point.
We wish the young crew “fair winds and following seas” as they explore Australia’s east coast across 10 adventure-filled days. We also thank those who attended Sub Base Platypus on Sunday and contributed to a shipshape afternoon.
About the Young Endeavour Youth Development Program
The Young Endeavour Youth Development Program sees Australians aged 16 to 23 undertake voyages onboard STS Young Endeavour. Under the watchful eye of the Royal Australian Navy staff crew, the youth crew step out of their comfort zone and learn the skills required to sail a square-rigged tall ship, and even take control of the ship for 24 hours!
Construction of Young Endeavour began in the UK in 1986 and the tall ship was gifted to the people of Australia in 1988. Today, the tall ship is Australia’s national sail training ship, having already trained over 14,000 youth across Australia.
