Sub Base Platypus recognised by National Trust for exemplary adaptive re-use

Yesterday, the emerging waterfront destination was named the winner in the 'Adaptive Re-use’ category at the National Trust’s 2021 National Heritage Awards.

The award is a testament to our collaborators on the Sub Base Platypus Renewal Project including lahznimmo architects (architect and urban design) and ASPECT Studios (landscape architects and urban design). 

When Sub Base Platypus was opened in May 2018, it marked the first time the site – formerly a gasworks, torpedo factory and submarine base – had been accessible to the public in 150 years. Since then, the Harbour Trust has continued to position the destination as a contemporary place for community recreation and work. As part of this undertaking, we have sought to reveal, reimagine and activate its important historic spaces.
