The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) has announced the winners of the 2024 NSW State Awards. AILA is the peak body for landscape architecture in Australia, advocating quality design to protect and sustain landscapes for greater places for all to enjoy.

The Cockatoo Island / Wareamah Master Plan and Sub Base Platypus Torpedo Factory, North Sydney each winning a cultural heritage category state award for landscape architecture recognises the great work by the Harbour Trust and our consultants of the diverse range of projects undertaken to protect and manage its extraordinary harbourside destinations.

The Harbour Trust Executive Director Janet Carding said, “We congratulate our winning design agencies Tyrrell Studio in collaboration with Mott McDonald and Klok Advisory, Turf Design Studios and their project team who have demonstrated the significant cultural heritage of Cockatoo Island/ Wareamah and Sub Base Platypus respectively through these central projects.

“The Cockatoo Island / Wareamah Master Plan is going through its approval process, and we anticipate will shortly be published. It offers our new vision for reactivation and transformation of the island over time. Bringing together visitor experiences and adaptive re-use of the heritage buildings and natural environments to become the vibrant and connected heart of the Western Sydney Harbour.

“We are pleased the completion of the Sub Base Platypus Torpedo Factory Renewal Project has created a new multifunctional public space within the former 1942 Torpedo Factory. The design and landscape elements interpret the site’s rich and layered history. Together with the new Wirra Birra Park on the lower level, creating a multilayered experience attracting new visitors with our immersive stories.”

The Cockatoo Island / Wareamah Master Plan and Sub Base Platypus Torpedo Factory will continue to the 2024 National Landscape Architecture Awards held later this year.
